Police Clarify Stance: No Offence for Men with Dreadlocks or Unconventional Dressing

In recent times, there have been distressing accounts of young Nigerians facing undue profiling and arrests based on their choice of hairstyle, particularly those with dreadlocks. However, a recent statement by the police in Delta State, South-south Nigeria, has sought to rectify this issue and put an end to such unwarranted harassment.

According to Bright Edafe, the police spokesperson in Delta State, men who opt for dreadlocks as their preferred hairstyle are not committing any offense and should not be subjected to any form of harassment, including by law enforcement officers. In a video message shared on X this Tuesday, Mr. Edafe emphasized the need for the public to understand that individual choices in hairstyle, dressing, and appearance do not warrant mistreatment.

Mr. Edafe, a deputy superintendent of police, made it clear that the same principle applies to women who choose to wear bum shorts, miniskirts, or forego wearing a bra. The message is simple: no one should face discrimination or harassment based on their personal style choices.

Addressing the issue of recent complaints about harassment by vigilantes, anti-cult groups, and some overzealous police officers, Mr. Edafe encouraged the public to contact him directly or demand to be taken to a police station if they encounter any unwarranted mistreatment.

Furthermore, he highlighted that the Delta State Government has refuted claims suggesting that it was targeting young people for their dressing styles deemed indecent, putting an end to any misconceptions or rumors circulating in this regard.

This development stands as a significant step in promoting individual freedom and eliminating baseless discrimination within the community. The Delta State police's reassurance to the public serves as a vital reminder of the importance of respecting personal choices and upholding the rights of every individual, irrespective of their appearance or style. As the police take a firm stand against discrimination, it is hoped that such positive initiatives will foster a more inclusive and tolerant society for all.
